Knox Net Zero
Building a recognisable identity for climate action across Knox.

Knox City Council's Climate Response Plan 2021–2031 set two ambitious targets: for Council operations to reach net zero emissions by 2030, and for the wider Knox community to reach net zero by 2040.

Getting there involves action across energy, transport, buildings, business, the natural environment and the wider community.

Citizen By Design was engaged to create an identity that could bring all of this activity together – giving Knox Net Zero a clear and consistent presence across the municipality.

Designed to be clear, optimistic and easy to recognise.

The Knox Net Zero identity combines bold typography with a circular zero, creating a simple mark that works across everything from publications to public charging stations.

The identity was also designed to sit comfortably alongside Knox City Council's existing brand, while being distinctive enough for people to recognise Net Zero communications at a glance.

How do you turn a complex, decade-long Council strategy into something a whole community can recognise and take part in?

Climate action covers a lot of ground. Some initiatives are led directly by Council, while others rely on residents, businesses and community organisations making changes themselves.

The identity needed to work across all of these areas without making climate change feel overly complicated or out of reach. It needed to make Council's work more visible, help people understand how different initiatives connect, and encourage the community to see that everyone has a part to play.

One Plan. Many Areas of Action.

Knox's Climate Response Plan covers eight areas: renewable energy, transport, the natural environment, efficient buildings, advocacy, business and industry, community health and community education.

A set of simple icons was created to make these areas easier to identify and to help organise information across different communications.

Making individual action part of the bigger picture.

Net Zero Heroes extended the campaign directly into the community, encouraging residents to think about the practical things they could do at home and in everyday life.

Outdoor advertising, postcards, merchandise and other campaign material used straightforward, positive messaging to make taking action feel achievable and worthwhile.

From renewable energy and electric vehicle infrastructure to community education and progress reporting, Knox Net Zero helps make the many parts of the program feel like part of one shared effort towards Council net zero by 2030 and community net zero by 2040.
