A club crest is more than a logo. Worn on shirts, displayed around grounds and carried by supporters, it becomes a symbol of identity, belonging and pride.
The best crests are distinctive enough to be recognised instantly, but meaningful enough to represent the history, values and ambitions of the club behind them. Three qualities sit at the heart of a successful club identity: recognition, unity and legacy.
Recognition
A strong crest gives a club a distinctive visual identity – something players, supporters and communities can recognise instantly.
It doesn’t need to communicate every part of the club’s history in a single mark. The strongest identities find a balance between meaning and simplicity, creating something that can work consistently across shirts, merchandise, signage, social media and communications.
Unity
Club identities have a unique responsibility: they belong to more than the organisation itself.
Players wear them, supporters display them and communities identify with them. A successful crest creates a shared symbol that people can gather around – building recognition, belonging and pride both on and off the field.
Legacy
Redesigning an established club crest requires respect for what came before.
History, symbols, colours and traditions often carry generations of meaning, so progress doesn’t necessarily mean starting again. The challenge is deciding what should be preserved, what can be simplified and what needs to evolve.
Done well, a refreshed identity can feel both familiar and new – carrying the club’s history forward without being constrained by it.
